At the moment (October 2015) there is a rather fine small exhibition of photographs of beach cabins taken on film in black and white by the late Gerard Lemeunier, on show at the mediatheque of Hermanville-sur-mer, near Caen. We went to the opening and the accompanying lecture by Bernard Chereau on Friday evening. There being another photographic meeting at Ver-sur-mer the next day we decided to stay at Ouistreham overnight which allowed us to photograph the resort - and its beach cabins - at the end of the season. Having acquired rather more photographs than were really needed I decided to put some into a new gallery of their own, after converting the images to black and white. This gallery is inside the France group.
I have also put a few of the images in their original colour format in the Coast/Au bord de la mer folder. The Friday afternoon was sunny and there were a few people on the beaches, even some visiting their cabins. We had however not allowed much time to explore so had to return the following morning. The weather was still dry but cooler and greyer. With the tide out the sandy beach at Riva Bella extended far out but it was largely empty. The few visitors at 10 am were mainly joggers and dog walkers, but other activities were beginning. Sand yachts were being prepared. A microlite flew over flowed by a small flock of geese. Businesses were starting to open up in the anticipation of visitors later in the day, by which time we had had to move on.
Riva Bella is a rather fine resort, easily overlooked. We have passed it so many times joining or leaving the ferry for Portsmouth at Ouistreham, but we had only stopped once before. and then we had looked at the town rather than the beach. It deserves a visit in high Summer, although there was something rather special about the end of season feel in early October.
